The 2011 Elvstrom-Zellerbach Regatta sailed at the St Francis Yacht Club the weekend of April 16-17, 2011.
This year's event served as a test for the upcoming 2011 Laser 4.7 and Master Worlds to be sailed at the St Francis Yacht Club the end of July, beginning of August. The event drew sailors from all over North America, including 9 Laser 4.7 sailors, 22 Radial sailors and 27 Standard sailors.
Racing on Saturday (see accompanying video) represented "typical" San Francisco conditions, a building breeze throughout the day, fog rolling in at one point but then backing out again by the afternoon. In contrast, Sunday could be categorized as more "class San Francisco" with the wind pushing into the mid-twenty knot range, the low overcast never really clearing, coupled with a big ebb tide to make for choppy water. Tough sailing!
After two days and six races, with one throwout, Lola Bushnell dominated the 4.7 fleet, followed by Alexander Fritz and Kyle Larsen. Great Grandmaster Peter Seidenberg easily won in the Radial fleet, followed by Master David Lapier and junior Drake Jenson. In a highly competitive Standard fleet, Master Al Clark bested Kevin Taugher (by winning the last race) with 2 time Master World Champion Scott Ferguson in third.
